DORWONTONY @ SUSAN'S BAY

A fire decimated the Susan's Bay community in Freetown on Wednesday, 24th March 2021, leaving many elderly people displaced. Save The Children reported that, many children have been reported missing while several others became homeless a day after a fire devastated the relatively poor community in Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown.

The fire, the cause of which is yet unknown, broke out late in Susan's Bay, an overcrowded area where thousands of poor families, mostly fishermen and petty traders, live.

The fire left thousands of people, including hundreds of children, “homeless among heaps of burned out rubble that used to be their houses. Some children are feared to be injured or separated from their families,” the statement said.

There was a large-scale fire at the Susan's Bay community in Freetown in the last week of March and many disadvantaged people were affected.

Dorwontony for the Aged (DoFA), supported the Susan’s Bay community that was so badly affected with clothing, bundles of water, slippers and shoes particularly for the aged.

The members present took the opportunity to extend their sympathy to the old people that were impacted by the fire incident.

" Diasters are unimaginable challenges which are inevitable," the CEO of DOFA expressed.

“Thousands of families in Susan’s Bay already live in dire conditions. In just a matter of minutes, they lost all of their possessions: their pan-bodies, their clothing, cash and food - and whatever little they owned,” she added.

Doreen further stated that the concern they have for the aged meant they had to do something and the donations was the right response.

The Sierra Leone Red Cross were on hand to support the efforts of DORWONTONY, ensuring that the donations were received in a very safe environment given the challenges of public gatherings under the corona virus pandemic.

She concluded by saying that DORWONTONY will continue to advocate for more support to the aged all over the country.
